Explore Stockholm's Hanseatic and Maritime Heritage curated with the History Channel. Journey through Stockholm's historical ties to the Hanseatic League and its maritime legacy.
Begin in Gamla Stan, Stockholm's medieval Old Town, a former hub of trade within the Hanseatic League. Stroll through narrow cobblestone streets and admire 16th- and 17th-century buildings adorned with Baroque doorways and Coats of Arms. Visit the Stortorget, the Great Square that served as a marketplace central to Stockholm's role in northern European commerce.
Continue to Djurgården, once royal hunting grounds, and visit the Vasa Museum. Marvel at the 17th-century battleship Vasa, a symbol of Sweden's maritime power during its Hanseatic ties. Salvaged in 1961 after sinking in 1628, this ship reflects Sweden's critical role in the Baltic trade network.
End in Sigtuna, Sweden's first Christian town, founded 1,000 years ago. Walk along Stora Gatan, Sweden's oldest street, and see the legacy of its early trade and cultural connections to the Hanseatic world.
Notes:
Travel to Sigtuna is one hour each way; Stockholm time is limited. Shore excursions curated with The HISTORY Channel are offered and administered exclusively by Holland America. The HISTORY Channel™ is a trademark of A&E Television Networks, LLC.
