Southeast Iceland is renowned for its stunning glacial landscapes, majestic mountains, and picturesque coastal areas. The main emphasis of this outing is on geology, glaciology, and the ever-changing nature of nature itself.
A scenic drive takes you from Djúpivogur and through the town of Höfn where a short comfort stop will be made. During the drive, the diverse, dynamic and unusual geology of Southeast Iceland is readily apparent.
You will stop at Hoffelsjökull Glacier, which is part of the larger Vatnajökull Glacier and Vatnajökull National Park. This is both scenic and educational — the view of the glacier and its pro-glacial lake is breathtaking, and it offers a textbook example of how glaciers in Iceland, and indeed, all over the world, have been affected by global climate change over the last century or so.
After a light walk around the area, you will head back to Djúpivogur with a brief stop at Mánagarður community house.
On the way back to Djúpivogur, take photos of the Hvalnesskriður scree slope, with vast and stunning views.
Notes:
Suitable for guests with mobility limitations with a companion to assist. Some sights can be viewed from the coach parking area; all walking is optional. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. Parents traveling with children under the age of 3 must rent a child's car seat from the tour operator; please see the Shore Excursions team on board. You cannot use your child's car seat from home in Iceland. Travel time to Höfn is approximately 1½ hours each way, with additional driving between sites.
