Travel along the coast of beautiful Prince Edward Island for a step back in time and peek into some genuine PEI history.
The mystique surrounding Canada's lighthouses is rooted in pragmatism — they were crucial for trade and commerce, vastly increasing the safety of the first mode of transportation used by early settlers. Most lighthouses built before 1873 are octagonal in shape — constructed when timber was abundant in the province. Those built after 1873 are square tapered. Learn more from your guide about these buildings that have outlasted generations and, if their walls could talk, would tell some hair-raising tales. Each lighthouse has unique day markings and distinguishing flash patterns, so sailors always know which headlight it was.
You'll stop at the Point Prim Lighthouse, standing 60 feet tall and built in 1846. This is Prince Edward Island's oldest lighthouse.
Next on the agenda is the Wood Islands Lighthouse on the Northumberland Strait. At 50 feet tall, this one began operations in 1876 to aid fishing boats around Wood Island. It has an attached six-room, two-story dwelling where the keepers resided before the light station was automated in 1990. It was the last in PEI to be manned.
For a change of pace, the Rossignol Estate Winery offers unlimited wine tasting. The winery has a 45,000-bottle capacity and produces various premium fruit and table wines made from local produce. Try the Marechal Foch, Cassis, Liberty Blossom, L'Acadie Blanc, and wild blueberry and blackberry mead.
Notes:
Corkage policy: Wine purchased on this tour is exempt from the onboard corkage fee (offer limited to one bottle of wine per person).
