Connect with nature while supporting vital wildlife conservation efforts on a visit to an ARCAS wildlife shelter, and a serene boat ride through one of Guatemala's most scenic natural landscapes, the Chiquimulilla Canal.
Meet a veterinary biologist at the animal rescue center for a guided visit. Discover how ARCAS has become a beacon of hope for endangered species affected by habitat loss, illegal trafficking, and environmental degradation. Learn how vital conservation initiatives are accomplished, from rescuing and rehabilitating endangered species to returning them to the wild. Meet some of the center's remarkable residents, including parrots, macaws, and monkeys, each with an individual story of survival and care. Take a tranquil boat ride along the Chiquimulila Canal — a picturesque waterway in Guatemala's coastal wetlands. Tour requires less than one mile (1.6 km) of walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, gravel, and sand. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The boat ride is uncovered. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Bring insect repellent. Flash photography is not permitted. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
