Visby, the capital of Gotland, boasts a swashbuckling history that spans the Viking Age, a flourishing medieval period, and the rise of the powerful Hanseatic League. Today, however,
Visby is best known as the Town of Roses and Ruins and is one of Sweden's most popular vacation resorts.
To gain a geographical perspective of the walled city, you will begin with a drive along the coast up to the Gallow Hills viewpoint. Take in the marvelous view of the Baltic Sea and Visby.
Then, you'll head back towards town by way of the old Hanseatic harbor of Almedalen and the Kruttornet — a powder tower that has the distinction of being Visby's oldest structure.
Stroll through the Botanical Gardens and, reboarding your motorcoach, pass through a gate en route to the Maiden's Tower. Skirting part of the remaining two-mile-long, 13th-century city wall to Dalmansporten, continue with a guided walk down through the narrow, winding, medieval streets to see the impressive St Mary's Cathedral and the evocative ruins of one of the city's many medieval churches.
Notes:
Tour requires two hours of walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and steps. Within the medieval walled town, the guided walk is mainly downhill. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes.
