Trondheim is one of Norway's oldest cities and was founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason in AD 997. The city is situated at the estuary of the River Nid, facing the wide Trondheimsfjord.
Walk along the river, savoring Trondheim's village-like atmosphere and its ancient and modern architecture. You'll cross the market square with the statue of the founder of the city. Continue past the Nidaros Cathedral and the Archbishop's palace, dating back to the Middle Ages.
Passing through the restored Old Town, called Bakklandet, you'll admire the many picturesque wooden houses painted in vivid colors. Here, small cafés and simple pubs sit alongside exclusive, upscale restaurants. Watch for the bicycle elevator — a unique piece of fascinating technology that gives bike riders a welcome (and free!) push up a steep hill.
Towards the river, you'll see the old drawbridge, painted bright red, and head down the street along the riverbank with views over to the old warehouses on the other side.
