Joined to the Isle of Lewis, Harris is the even more rugged and remote Hebridean island that beckons visitors curious about its legendary beaches and its epic history. That history includes quite a bit of alcohol distilling, little of which was undertaken legally.
Your adventure takes you south from Stornoway to the Isle of Harris — a landscape of hills, mountains, and gorgeous coastal scenery. Here, you'll visit the Isle of Harris Distillery tucked into the shoreline of East Loch Tarbert. Established only in 2015, this award-winning distillery is the first legal distillery ever built on Harris. But its many bootlegging predecessors have ensured that distilling spirits on the island has considerable longevity.
Harris Distillery began its life producing gin, but in December 2023, they released their first single malt whisky — eight years in the making. With a warm welcome from the knowledgeable staff, you'll embark on a behind-the-scenes tour and learn how the whisky and gin are each distilled. Sample two different drams of whisky along the way.
Enjoy some free time in Tarbert — the island's main village — to explore. Be sure to browse in the nearby Harris Tweed Shop — this is the global epicenter of a brand name that enjoys worldwide renown far exceeding its minimalist cottage-industry infrastructure.
