Meet your guide at the pier to explore Lerwick, capital of Shetland. First settled in 1625, the town perches on a sheltered stretch of water between the Mainland island of Shetland and the island of Bressay. Its name derives from leir-vik — Norse for "muddy bay."
Walk past Market Cross to see the Tolbooth headquarters for Lerwick's lifeboat station. On cobblestone Commercial Street, you'll pass old merchant homes and warehouses en route to the Town Hall. Built in 1862, it features a series of stained-glass windows depicting Shetland history.
In the center of town is Fort Charlotte (1665), built by order of King Charles II. The fortress successfully repelled a Dutch naval attack during the Third Anglo-Dutch War. Decommissioned after the Napoleonic Wars, the fort has served as a Customs House, Lerwick's town jail, and a courthouse. Take in the lovely views from its battlements.
Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship. Options for shopping in town include crafts and famous Shetland woolens. You are also welcome to visit the Shetland Museum (at your own expense).
Notes:
Tour requires walking approximately three miles. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and many steps. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Interior viewing of the stained-glass windows at the Town Hall is not guaranteed. Bring local currency or credit cards for additional purchases. The Town Hall is closed on weekends.
