Travel through Cornwall's pleasant countryside, where green fields merge with the sea and quaint and colorful granite cottages nestle among working farms.
You're headed to Charlestown via a road originally designed to accommodate six horses and carts abreast. This tiny, unspoiled port village has a long history revolving around shipbuilding and the export of china clay. Economic decline has left Charlestown essentially frozen in time.
Stroll at your leisure through the last such village in the county. Keep an eye out for the square-rigged sailing ships still seen from time to time with their lofty masts and graceful lines.
Further along the coast, you will discover photogenic Polperro, whose appeal is timeless. A small minibus (at your own expense) conveys visitors down to the harbor. This village has a rich fishing heritage, and its enchanting harbor is fringed by a jumble of whitewashed cottages historically used for storing smuggled hauls of exotic cargoes. Once crowded with contraband, the cellar shops are now packed with local pottery and paintings, jewelry and maritime crafts. "When in Rome…" why not try a Cornish pasty? This savory meat-filled pastry is a local must-do.
Notes:
Lunch is not included. You will have time to purchase lunch at your own expense during the tour. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour requires a 10- to 15-minute walk from the coach parking area to the waterfront of Polperro. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines and steps.
