Departing the pier, drive along the rugged coastline of County Dublin, crossing the Liffey River and heading north with panoramic views of Dublin Bay.
Visit Malahide Castle, seat of the Talbot family. Set on 250 acres of parkland, this castle dates back to the 14th century. It contains one of the finest collections of Irish period furniture, as well as a collection of Irish portrait paintings from the National Gallery. Explore the castle and make the most of the new interpretative center and retail facility.
Proceed through the villages of Malahide and Portmarnock, home of the world-famous Portmarnock Golf Club, known for hosting the Irish Open Championship.
You'll soon arrive in the quaint fishing port of Howth, where you'll stop at the 11th-century Abbey Tavern to enjoy an Irish lunch accompanied by traditional entertainment. A music and dance performance will have you tapping your feet and clapping your hands. Nestled against the ancient ruins of Howth Abbey with the lovely fishing harbor and marina below, the Abbey Tavern is an ideal place to rest and savor the atmosphere of old Ireland. Blazing turf fires, original stone walls, flagstone floors and gaslights add to the old-world charm.
Drive over the hilly summit with wonderful views of Dublin Bay and the Dublin Mountains beyond as you return to Dun Laoghaire.
Notes:
Minimum age to drink alcohol is 18 years, with a companion aged 21 years or older. The lunch venue is not wheelchair accessible; it is located up a flight of stairs with no elevator.
