Take in the legendary beauty of Sicily and of Taormina — the city that perfectly captures perhaps the essence of the island. Built in the 3rd century BC by the Greeks, Taormina was later almost completely renovated by the Romans. It is perched on a terrace overlooking the sea, and its medieval character will delight you.
Leave your motorcoach near the center of Taormina and set out on foot. Your guide will lead you along cobblestone streets to the Palazzo Corvaja, a 15th-century building with classic double windows.
A short walk brings you to the amazing and impressive Greco-Roman theatre that is Taormina's iconic landmark. Like the town, the theatre dates to the 3rd century BC. The Greeks did an incredible job of siting it — its width and acoustic qualities are so inimitable that it is still used for open-air concerts today. The Romans, who came later, did some work on the theatre, but even they were unable to vastly improve on the original.
Explore at your leisure, and make sure you turn around to appreciate the astounding view of Mount Etna looming above the town and the Bay of Naxos below. You will have time to stroll or shop along the famous Corso Umberto before returning to the ship.

Expect crowding in Taormina. Tour requires strenuous uphill walking. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and many steps. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Elevators are available to reach Taormina's gates but, in the event of long lines, you may be required to climb approximately 140 steps. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up.
