A panoramic drive through Split brings you to the Mestrovic Gallery. Ivan Mestrovic is the greatest Croatian sculptor of all time, and much of his impressive work is displayed here in his house-gallery.
Compared to bustling Split, time has stood still in nearby Solin — the site of the ancient Roman settlement of Salona. At the time of its greatest prosperity (the 3rd and 4th centuries), Salona had 40,000 inhabitants, while Split didn't even exist. Archaeologists have excavated remains of temples, an amphitheater, early Christian churches, burial grounds and Roman baths, which show centuries of prosperity and upheaval, peace and war.
Continue to the charming town of Trogir, driving along the beautiful Riviera of the Seven Castles. Situated on a small island wedged between the mainland and the larger island of Ciovo, Trogir is accessed by bridge. Except for its small green parks, the entire island is covered in spectacular houses of bleached stone, as well as palaces, churches, monasteries, towers and walls. The narrow streets impart a true feel for how life might have been in medieval times.
Visit the main attraction in Trogir — the Cathedral of St Lawrence. This 13th-century building is probably the finest example of sacral architecture in Croatia. The main portal, carved by Radovan in the 13th century, is world-famous. Other fine buildings you'll see are the Town Hall and Cipiko Palace. You will have some free time to explore the town on your own before boarding the coach back to Split.
