Transfer approximately one hour to Rome. Once in the city, you will board the hop-on, hop-off double-decker bus system to explore at your own pace. Your ticket entitles you to bus transportation between many of the main attractions in Rome. You are free to hop on and off as you wish and have complete flexibility to shop, sightsee, dine, or relax as you wish.
A 60- to 90-minute deluxe motorcoach transfer brings you to Rome's center. Here, you'll board the open-top, double-decker Hop-On, Hop-Off Red Line and tour the Eternal City.
Enjoy sightseeing, local attractions, shopping, museums, art galleries, restaurants and much more, as this tour allows you to experience the ancient history and beauty of Rome at your own pace and according to your own interests.
Explore cobblestone streets and the city's many piazzas or visit Rome's iconic landmarks. Along the route are the Colosseum, St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican, Castle Saint Angelo, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and much more. See it, selfie it and rejoin the bus which calls at each stop every 15 to 20 minutes. The bus provides fantastic views, with an entertaining audio narration in nine languages (English, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Russian, Arabic and Portuguese). Simply hop off at any of the designated stops or remain on board to relax and see it all.
At the end of the day, you'll transfer back to the ship at Civitavecchia.
Notes:
The coach that transfers you to Rome will drop you at Circus Maximus — stop 4 of the Hop-On, Hop-Off line (subject to change if traffic or event conditions dictate). You will receive your hop-on, hop-off ticket — a wristband — on the transfer buses. A clean headset is issued to you at the beginning of your tour, and you will keep it for the day. The full loop on the Red Line, without getting off the bus, is approximately one hour and 40 minutes. The tour is open to the general public, and the hop-on, hop-off bus is not exclusive to Holland America Line guests; you are merely purchasing a ticket for the bus service and are subject to traffic delays and possible wait times associated with the service. Due to the nature of this tour, there will be no refunds. Wear comfortable walking shoes. It is your responsibility to meet the transfer coach at the appointed time at the end of the tour. Entrance fees to attractions along the route are not included. Modest attire is required for visiting churches or cathedrals; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts and capri-length pants are not allowed. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses, wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Restoration/maintenance work may be underway at any venue at any time without prior notice; scaffolding can obscure views.
