Take winding roads through typical Greek villages on your way to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Epidaurus -- site of medical facilities and healing treatments in the ancient Greek world. Visit the remarkable theatre, built the ground. Enjoy a traditional Greek lunch; then, continue along the Argive Plain to visit the site of ancient Mycenae. Although excavations had begun here in 1841, it wasn't until 33 years later that a self-styled archaeologist, Heinrich Schliemann, unearthed Mycenae's treasures.
Enter the site via a walkway lined by impenetrable Cyclopean walls and through the Lions Gate. This is where Clytemestra received her husband, Agamemnon, on his return from Troy. Once inside the gate, explore the Royal Palace, the shaft graves and the remains of the city walls.
An archaeological briefing within the Treasury of Atreus (the Tomb of Agamemnon) enhances your understanding of these sites.
