Step off your ship and into the heart of Mount Maunganui, where you’ll be warmly welcomed and escorted by knowledgeable local Maori guides — all of whom whakapapa to this area — offering a genuine connection to place, people, and story.
Beginning at Salisbury Wharf, your journey starts with an introduction to the region, including the cultural significance of Mauao.
From here, you’ll set off on a relaxed and engaging walk through the community, visiting a selection of meaningful local spaces, each carrying its own story of
connection and care. Along the way, you’ll encounter vibrant public art, stand beneath the canopy of a 500+ year-old pohutukawa tree, and explore the Mount Maunganui
Community Gardens — a thriving hub that reflects the values of sustainability, sharing, and togetherness.
Your guides bring each location to life through storytelling, sharing insights into the land, its people, and the traditions that continue to shape it today. With gentle inclines and scenic viewpoints from Hopukiore (Mount Drury), and outlooks toward Moturiki (Leisure Island), there are plenty of opportunities to pause, take photos, and take in the fresh coastal air.
Along the way, engage your senses — feel the textures of the natural environment, breathe in the ocean air, and learn about native plants such as kawakawa, known for its healing properties and significance in Maori rongoa (traditional medicine).
Your experience concludes with a hands-on weaving workshop, where you’ll be guided through a traditional Maori practice using natural materials. Learn the
technique and create a woven piece to contribute and leave behind, becoming part of a shared expression of connection and creativity.
You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation of the culture, community, and coastal environment that make Mount Maunganui so special.
