A Heart for Community
Connect with the heart and soul of a vibrant community. Whether you're meeting friendly locals, encountering heirloom cultures, engaging with Native peoples, exploring hidden corners, or discovering beloved eateries, let lasting memories begin with warmth, hospitality, and genuine connection.
Begin this 3½-hour nature encounter with a short drive from Burnie to the Emu River. The 50-acre Fernglade Reserve is home to around 60 species of bird, wallabies, possums, devils, quolls, and many platypus. This location is one of the top three recognised wild platypus viewing locations in the world. This very special experience is interpreted by a qualified and experienced guide with many years of working in wildlife management, ecotourism and conservation.
Enjoy a delicious morning tea featuring local produce.
Out in the relaxing and tranquil garden, you will discover that it holds more than half of the world's cultivated species of rhododendron and many other compatible plants. It is truly a garden for all seasons.
Landscaped by volunteers from the virgin bush 35 years ago, this 27-acre garden contains lakes, waterfalls, several bridges, gazebos, long dry-stone walls and numerous walking paths. The plantings are organized into discrete areas in which species from each part of the world are grown together in a setting of appropriate companion plantings.
Rhododendrons begin flowering in August, with peak flowering from September to November. Vireya rhododendrons flower at least twice a year.
