Matsue is a city of canals located on an isthmus between Lakes Shinji and Nakaumi. Here, you will explore Matsue Castle, built in 1611 by Yoshiharu Horio, who governed the Shimane Prefecture at the time. It was completed a few years after the last decisive battle of feudal Japan. Today, only the castle keep and the stone wall remain. The donjon is designated one of Japan’s Important Cultural Properties. It has five tiers and is about 98 feet tall.
Sakaiminato’s Mizuki Shigeru Road is a popular destination for children and adults alike. The road, extending from Sakaiminato Station into the city proper, is an 800-yard-long arcade with some 153 bronze statues by manga artist Mizuki. Check out the fantasy creatures on display, including details on each character. You have some free time to enjoy the road at your own pace.
Notes:
Terrain includes approximately 70-100 steps to reach the castle gate. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse. Tour sequence may vary.
