Visit Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, which boasts a romantic blend of ancient Asian and French heritage and is a jewel in Vietnam's crown.
You will arrive in the city after an approximately 2½-hour drive from the pier. Lunch will be served upon your arrival.
Afterward, you will visit the Temple of Literature. The latter was built in 1070, dedicated to Confucius, and was Vietnam's first university.
Step inside the Hoa Lo Prison Museum, dubbed the "Hanoi Hilton" by American prisoners of war during the Vietnam War. Hoa Lo Prison. View the original cells, complete with leg-irons, along with a selection of bilingual (Vietnamese and English) displays illustrating the horrors of life in the prison during the French colonial period.
Enjoy a touch of Old Hanoi as you visit the Thirty-Six Streets — an ancient district where the essence of old Vietnamese culture is alive and well.
Before a Vietnamese dinner at a local restaurant, visit Tran Quoc Pagoda, built in 541 during the early Ly Dynasty and originally called Khai Quoc Pagoda.
Finally, reboard your motorcoach for the return journey through the undulating countryside to Halong.
Notes:
Travel time to Hanoi is approximately 2½ hours each way. The information at the Hoa Lo Museum is presented from a Vietnamese perspective and is likely to be at odds with American sentiment and sensitivities. Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered; shorts and short skirts are not allowed. Shoes and hats must be removed before you enter the temple(s). Bring along a pair of thick socks to protect your feet from the hot pavement.
