Climb aboard an air-conditioned motorcoach and relax as you acquaint yourself with Fukuoka city and its many splendors.
You'll pass the Tenjin area — part of Fukuoka's business and entertainment center and home to major department stores and specialty shops. Watch for the Fukuoka Dome, Japan's first retractable-roof baseball stadium.
Take photos at the iconic Fukuoka Tower. Considered a city landmark, it's Japan's largest seaside tower, standing 767 feet tall and covered in 8,000 semi-mirrored panels. The Tower functions as a broadcast antenna for TV and radio networks.
Fukuoka's oldest shrine was founded in AD 757. The Kushida Shrine is where local merchants pray for prosperity and health and is the centerpiece of a 1,200-year-old festival called Yamakasa. In mid-July, one-ton floats, elaborately decorated with depictions of gods, samurais, mythical creatures and historical figures, are pulled through the town and put on display at the shrine.
Head to the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, housed in three traditional townhouses that provide a compelling glimpse into Japan's old and fascinating culture. As you experience this recreation of a traditional Hakata neighborhood, view displays of historical photographs and artifacts and watch artisans often on hand to demonstrate the making of crafts.
The motorcoach will return you to the ship.
