This great outing combines Bangkok's hidden gems — seldom-seen local temples with their unique architectural styles. It's also an invitation to indulge in a wonderful dinner while enjoying a luxury cruise along the romantic, prettily illuminated River of Kings.
Leave the port on a 2½-hour drive to Bangkok. Marvel at the City of Angels' hidden treasures.
Visit Pariwat Temple, renowned for its stunning and distinctive buildings in an architectural style unlike any other temple. See the Benjarong (Thai porcelain designs in five colors) and stucco sculptures, which exhibit characteristics of international contemporary art. On display are some very eclectic images, ranging from gods and deities to angels, demons, various mythical creatures, the Indian Ramayana, the Legend of the Condor Heroes, American cowboys, Vikings, King Arthur, and Egyptian pharaohs.
At Yannawa Temple, notice the viharn, or assembly hall, built in the shape of a Chinese junk, which gives the temple its nickname — "the boat temple." It was built in the Ayutthaya Period before Bangkok was founded.
Next, enjoy a thrill ride on a local motorized tricycle (a tuk-tuk), passing through local communities before you reach the luxury Shangri-La Hotel. Take a few steps into the hotel and you will join a dinner cruise on a longboat along the Chao Phraya River .
