Join your Alaska Native guide to experience the dynamic history of this ancient island community through the eyes of its earliest people — the 'Lingít.
Journey from past to present, crossing the wooden bridge over tidal waters to the Chief Shakes Tribal House. This cedar ceremonial building is home to totems and some remarkable carvings. Inside, be seated to learn about the house's history and hear stories shared for centuries.
Reboard the shuttle for a panoramic drive through the historic streets of downtown Wrangell.
A nearby sandy beach is studded with the highest concentration of ancient petroglyph carvings in Southeast Alaska. Your guide will reveal the original stones, unravel the mysteries of the site, and assist you in creating a unique souvenir rubbing from your choice of replica.
The island's history will blossom before you at the Wrangell Museum. Here, you will walk chronologically through artifacts and images of the 'Lingít origins, Russian settlement, British trading post, gold rush frenzy, and rugged logging legacy of this frontier community.
Notes:
The tour requires some walking for maximum enjoyment. Terrain includes traversing a beach with uneven rocks and driftwood. Participants may remain on the observation platform but will miss a significant portion of the interpretation. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf and a warm hat. Tour vehicles are unable to accommodate wheelchairs; however, all sites visited are ADA-compliant.
