Explore Anchorage's unique coastal alpine mountains with a naturalist guide who tailors this short walk to your fitness level. Set out from the Glen Alps trailhead over a paved trail to the Anchorage Overlook observation deck. From the overlook in the Chugach (pronounced choo-gatch) foothills, you'll be able to see most of the greater Anchorage area. Chugach State Park is the third-largest State Park in the United States. Your guide will take you on a quarter-mile to two-mile walk on gravel trails to search out and discuss the flora, fauna, geology, animal tracks and life zones of the habitat. Some of the sights spotted usually include the Alaska Range, Mt McKinley, Cook Inlet, Turnagain Arm and glaciated volcanoes. Keep an eye out for moose, bear, dall sheep, marmots, arctic ground squirrels, hares, red fox, migratory birds and mountain runners. With your naturalist guide along to help you choose wisely, you'll have a chance to nibble on edible leaves, flowers and berries. Explore traditional and contemporary herb lore, identify birdsong, animal behaviors and enjoy stories about Alaskan and Native peoples' history. This trip is excellent for families. No experience necessary.
