How can a visit to otherworldly, magical Stonehenge be made even more special? Holland America Line has made it so with this early-opening visit for Holland America guests only. This is your chance to explore this mysterious and inexplicable stone circle and its Visitor Center before the day's opening hours — a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity arranged by Holland America and limited to just 50 privileged guests. The importance of this cannot be overstated — it is an exclusive experience to treasure forever.
You've heard of it, seen the photos, and contemplated your visit, but nothing prepares you for the might and mystery of one of the world’s most enigmatic monuments. Stonehenge's origins date back as far as the Pyramids, and it is now known that it was a work in progress between 3000 and 1000 BC. The stones are aligned so that, on the midsummer and midwinter solstices, the sun shines directly through the circle onto the central Heel Stone.
Your early start this morning is all worthwhile, as your pre-opening arrival lets you spend time at the stones without the crowds — a chance to meander through this mystical attraction in the stillness of the morning quiet. You will have about 45 minutes at the Stonehenge Visitor Center (during normal opening hours) afterward.
Reboard your coach for a short drive to the ancient city of Salisbury.
Nestled in southern England's rural heartland, Salisbury is a quintessentially English city. Its awe-inspiring centerpiece is Salisbury Cathedral, whose spire dominates the landscape for miles around. Step inside to see this exquisite example of early English Gothic design for yourself. There is much to see and do in and around Salisbury, and you will have free time to explore the city at your leisure before rejoining your coach for the return to Portland.
Notes:
This visit to Stonehenge is prior to the site opening to the public for the day. With a maximum of just 50 guests, this visit is extremely special. Stonehenge permits two group slots prior to public opening hours; a second private group will arrive after your exclusive visit to the stones. Participants must be able to board the coach unassisted; the coach is not wheelchair-lift equipped. The main areas in and around the coach parking area, the Visitor Center and the stone circle are all accessible to wheelchairs via paved paths and grass paths; however, there are no paths on the wider grass landscape. The on-site shuttle carriages are wheelchair accessible. Restrooms are available once the Visitor Center opens for the day. Tickets are non-refundable once booked.
