Begin your tour with a drive to the British Commonwealth War Cemetery. This poignant landmark lies three miles east of Chania on a small plateau, just above sea level, on the rim of Souda Bay. It is the final resting place of more than 1,500 of the 2,000 known British war fatalities here. The majority lost their lives in the Battle of Crete, fought between the Allied and German forces in May of 1941.
Reboard the coach and head to the Monastery of Agia Triada. This is the largest monastery in Crete and is situated on the Akrotiri Peninsula, north of Chania. The Turks destroyed most of its treasures in 1821. From Agia Triada, you’ll drive to the Tomb of Venizelos to take in the incredible views over Chania and the Venetian harbor.
Chania town was built around the Venetian harbor and its 15th-century lighthouse. It is the second largest city on the island of Crete. The town features numerous picturesque, narrow streets and architecture that perfectly showcase the influence of various foreign interlopers. The Market Hall may be closed due to renovation works; a visit to the old city market will be substituted. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
