Take a panoramic drive along the Paseo de Montejo — a beautiful thoroughfare inspired by the great boulevards of Paris. One stunning mansion after another, all built by wealthy Spanish colonists more than a century ago, constitute a fine and permanent reminder of prosperous European roots.
In downtown Merida, the best way to immerse yourself in the local culture is to start at its foremost fresh-food market. Examine the produce and find out where it comes from. Your pause at three stands to learn how the produce is used and enjoy some tasting experiences. As with all great cities, the market lies at Merida's culinary heart and cultural soul. Try local panuchos, salbutes, and empanadas. Further on, taste the most famous tacos of Yucatán — cochinita pibil and lechon. These are melt-in-the-mouth favorites.
Visit the Mérida Museum, which chronicles the development of Maya and Mexican cultural heritage through the centuries. It is housed in a building of great architectural and historical importance.
Finally, it's margarita o'clock. Take a seat in a classic old cantina and relax over a zesty, super-fresh margarita .
