Combine the best of city sightseeing with the opportunity to see some of Australia’s best-loved endemic animals only minutes from the city center.
On a panoramic drive, your guide will point out the highlights of the northern side of Melbourne, home to the trendy hotspots of Carlton and Fitzroy, universities and great medical institutions, and the Royal Exhibition Building.
At the renowned Melbourne Zoo, visit the Australian Bush enclosure. See southern koalas as they snooze high up in the trees. Walk through the captivating Great Flight Aviary, where red-tailed black cockatoos, Wonga pigeons, apostle birds and jabiru sport snazzy color schemes. You'll easily spot parrots, honeyeaters, pigeons, ducks and waders.
Keep your distance as you say g’day to the Tasmanian devil -- Australia’s gangster marsupial with no conscience and even less social grace. As aggressive as they may be, once you learn about the plight of these amazing animals in the wild and how close they are to extinction, you’ll want to extend a helping hand (only metaphorically, of course, in the interests of retaining all your limbs).
Head underground to the wombat’s burrow to see these super-sized creatures that weigh up to 70 lbs (32 kg).
Finally, head into an open bushland landscape, where kangaroos, wallabies and emus mingle sociably or lollygag about, posing languorously for your amazing holiday snaps.
Enjoy some panoramic sightseeing through Fitzroy and Collingwood, where working-class origins have surrendered to become Australia’s most dynamic creative hub.
