Depart Anchorage with a 1½-hour panoramic drive along one of Alaska's Scenic Byways — the beautiful Seward Highway.
Your destination is the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center — a non-profit sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska's wildlife through education, research and quality animal care. Holland America's expanded partnership with AWCC has assisted with improving the center's facilities and allows you to view our sponsored moose, Eland, and/or his friends in their habitat, creating memorable moments for you. AWCC rehabilitates orphaned, injured and displaced animals and provides them with a forever home within its 200 acres, bringing you closer to Alaska’s wildlife than ever before. Spacious habitats allow the animals to engage in natural, wild behavior while fulfilling their role as education ambassadors.
On this exclusive behind-the-scenes visit, you're invited to see how dedicated staff care for the resident moose. A guided experience highlights the training and enrichment programs that support the moose's health and well-being. You've always wondered how to weigh a moose; today, you'll finally have the answer. This is crucial data, as body weight is a key metric for overall health. At AWCC, you'll find that animal care remains top priority as you gain insights into moose behavior. (Holland America's sponsored moose, Eland, may be present for the demonstration; however, the others like to have a turn, and nobody likes to feel left out, so the moose you see on the day of your visit may not be Eland.)
Return to the ship in Anchorage, pausing en route at Potter's Marsh — a public-access entrance at the southern end of the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge. Here, you are treated to a stunning view of Turnagain Arm. A wooden boardwalk winds 1,550 feet from the coach parking area through the marsh and across watery openings and sedges, allowing you to explore this perfect habitat that is home to a wide variety of water and wader birds.
Notes:
This tour is available only to guests whose cruise does not begin or end in Anchorage. Experiences at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center demonstrations vary weekly, depending on the needs of the moose and staff. No two sessions are alike. Lunch/food is not included. You will have time to purchase food at your own expense from the on-site food vendors. Bring local currency or credit cards. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, a packed dirt trail/road that can be muddy and slippery, and a few steps. Time permitting, you are welcome to take the complimentary shuttle from the Hospitality Center in downtown Anchorage back to the ship.
