You've done hot springs before, but not like this. Hot springs typically originate from volcanic activity, but here in Greenland, the springs are so deep that the heat comes from beneath the Earth's mantle.
Begin with a scenic boat ride (about 90 minutes each way) across Qaqortoq's magical fjord to the small island of Uunartoq. This lovely spot's first mention in historical accounts dates back to AD 1340, and it is the only place in Greenland that has hot springs to bathe in.
Step ashore and follow a narrow path for 10 minutes as you walk to the springs. A small hut serves as a changing room.
Immerse yourself in pure joy as you listen to the Arctic silence surrounding the hot pools and take in the view of icebergs floating in the fjord beside you.
Return to Qaqortoq afterward.
Notes:
This tour is not guided; your visit to the hot pools will be independent and at your leisure. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, biodegradable sunscreen and a hat. There are small changing facilities at the springs. Bring a change of clothing for afterward. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here; you are trading breadth of guide experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties or operational surprises that may crop up. Restrooms are not available on tour.
