Board a comfortable, air-conditioned coach for an enriching journey to the multicultural city of Tapachula, where tradition meets modernity.
You'll visit the planetarium for a warm welcome in the form of an authentic Mayan dance performance. The mystique of this ancient civilization is almost tangible as you enjoy the performance and watch a fascinating audiovisual presentation about Mayan culture and its enduring legacy.
Continue to Tapachula's historic downtown core, where you'll visit the Archaeological Museum. Here, you will encounter the renowned stelae of Izapa, along with remarkable sculptures and artifacts from the influential Mayan culture. Among the highlights is Stela 25, associated with the Milky Way galaxy and the prophecy of a new era. The stelae are thought to date from roughly 300 BC to 100 BC. Your guide helps you to interpret these amazing artifacts.
Finally, enjoy a guided walking tour past many of Tapachula's most iconic landmarks. Admire the striking stained-glass windows of City Hall and visit the famous Church of Saint Augustine, dedicated to the revered patron saint of the city.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Travel time to Tapachula is 45 minutes each way.
