Growing your own food is the Latvian way of life. Visit Riga's UNESCO World Heritage Site Central Market, opened in 1930 as one of the largest and most progressive markets in Europe. The pavilions that house the market first served as World War I Zeppelin hangars for the German occupying forces. Each of the five pavilions houses one food type -- vegetables, dairy, meat, fish and gastronomy products with both Latvian-grown products and imported goods. Walk through the market and taste some of the local specialties.
A guided walk through the Old Town introduces you to a labyrinth of cobblestone streets, gorgeous architecture and the Dome Cathedral. See St Peter's, St George's and St John's Churches, part of the restored city wall, and the medieval John's Yard. View 14th-century Riga castle, which now houses the President's Palace.
Watch for the outstanding Freedom Monument (1935) as you head back to the ship.
Notes:
Tour sequence may vary. Participants must be able to walk long distances, stand for long periods and be in good physical condition. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
