Discover the crisp winter beauty of Kiel on this atmospheric walking tour through its harbor and its historic center, bedecked with festive Christmas decorations and lights.
In winter, the scenic shoreline of Kiel Fjord takes on a particularly calm and atmospheric character — ships glide quietly through the grey-blue water while seagulls wheel above. You'll walk past historic churches and hidden courtyards, including the striking St Nikolai Church, which exudes a peaceful, reflective air.
In the heart of the city, near the lively Holstenstraße pedestrian zone, shops and cafés festooned in seasonal decorations offer a warm contrast within a bustling streetscape.
The charming Kiel Christmas Market entices you to explore among wooden stalls brimming with colorful knick-knacks. The scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine creates a warm holiday atmosphere by the sea. Sample roasted almonds, fried salmon, or sweet sugar apples (at your own expense) during your free time, and join your guide for the stroll back to the ship. Time permitting, guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Tour is conducted entirely on foot and requires around 2.5 hours of walking.
