During the building of the Panama Canal by the United States, the plan arose to create a lake as part of the system. A large earthen wall was built in the Chagres area to form Gatún Lake. The Panama Canal depends largely on rainwater for its operation, so its watershed of the Panama Canal is, and always has been, assiduously protected.
Afterward, you'll visit the Agua Clara Visitor Center and the Canal Expansion Lookout to see the canal in operation.
