On the global stage, Singapore stands out as a bright beacon of far-flung flavors. Soaking up most of the spotlight is some very bold architecture but, beyond its iconic skyline hides a cache of savory secrets. Today you will discover Singapore in the best way possible -- through its authentic and varied food scene. You'll check out one of the city's prettiest neighborhoods, explore a wet market, and enjoy the uniquely-Singaporean experience of eating in a hawker center.
A panoramic drive through the city center brings you to the lush Tiong Bahru district, known for its Art Deco shops and galleries. Meet your guide here, and your introduction to savory Singapore begins with a local breakfast – to sample.
Then, you'll then explore a wet market. The locals shop here for everything from fish and meat to spices and noodles. It's called a wet market because the floors are typically wet. Wander among the stalls, as your guide shares information about Singapore's distinctive local cuisine. You will have a chance to sample some of the mouthwatering fruits of Asia.
You'll also head to a hawker center, which is essentially a gathering of street food-style vendors under one roof. Among the densely-packed hawker stalls, discover abundant, cheap and tasty dishes. Some of the signature dishes of Singapore are sold here, including nasi padang (a meal of rice eaten with beef, seafood, poultry and vegetables), chicken rice, wonton noodles, and laksa (spicy coconut noodle soup). In addition, you'll learn from the cooks how they started their businesses and find out how they prepare their specialty food items.
Finally, you will visit Chinatown. Step inside a temple for a moment of hush and a respite from the busy street scene. Down a trendy street nearby, hipster cafés and specialty shops rule the day. Take advantage of some free time to purchase souvenirs or just watch the locals engaged in a game of Chinese chess.
Sated after a day filled with fun memories, you'll head back to the ship.
