Discover the flavors and traditions of Niigata, Japan’s leading rice-producing region, where prized grains inspire an array of local specialties. Begin at DHC Brewery, which has produced sake in the area for more than 100 years, and sample its expertly crafted sake.
Continue to Yamada Brewery, established in 1891 and known for miso, shoyu and other traditional products. Learn how fermented soybean miso has long been an essential seasoning in Japanese cuisine, then taste a selection that may include the brewery’s distinctive miso-zuke pickled vegetables.
At the North Culture Museum, enjoy lunch featuring Niigata rice steamed in a traditional hagama cooking pot. Afterwards, explore the Former Villa of Ito Bunkichi, a prosperous landowner’s residence in Yokogoshi village. Construction began in 1882 and took eight years to complete. The traditional 65-room home is celebrated for its grand style, beautiful Japanese Garden and spacious reception hall, reserved for family ceremonies and overlooking the grounds. Return to the ship following your visit.
