Uruguay is a true treasure with miles of stunning beaches, colonial cities to explore, diverse wine-growing regions, an exciting food scene, and a rich cultural heritage. Explore the capital city of Montevideo, visit a vineyard, taste the region's famous asado meats, and see a tango demonstration.
Relax and enjoy a panoramic drive through laid-back Montevideo. Its waterfront, lined with palm trees and a well-preserved Old Town populated by historic buildings, evokes thoughts of the French Riviera.
Next, you'll head 25 miles north of Montevideo to visit one of Uruguay's leading vineyards — the Juanicó Winery. The terroir of Juanicó makes this area an excellent site for viticulture. Tour the 300-acre vineyard, which features a distinctive structure with an intelligent canopy-management system based on organic agriculture principles. The cultivated varieties include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Marselan, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. But the specialty is the Tannat varietal, which has won several prizes in the European market. In the company's state-of-the-art winery and cellars, enjoy a tasting of Juanicó's exceptional vintages.
Nothing says Uruguay more than its great culinary tradition of grilled meats. Eat like a local as you dine from the grill, and complement your carnivorous meal with a variety of fresh, delicious salads.
Watch a demonstration of tango — a sensual dance with roots in Argentina and Uruguay.
