In partnership with the History Channel, uncover the Viking and Hanseatic legacy of Roskilde, an ancient hub of trade and power.
Begin at the Viking Ship Museum, home to five Viking longboats excavated from Roskilde Fjord. These ships highlight Roskilde's maritime importance during the Viking Age, connecting Scandinavia to the Hanseatic League's expansive trade and bargaining network.
Outside, watch master craftsmen recreate Viking-age ships using traditional techniques, keeping alive the skills that once supported international commerce.
Next, visit Roskilde Cathedral, Scandinavia's earliest brick Gothic cathedral and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 12th century, the cathedral reflects Roskilde's historical prominence in trade and religion. Danish monarchs, including Harald Bluetooth, rest here in ornate tombs. Admire the bronze statues, frescoes, and wooden choir stalls depicting scenes of creation and judgment, symbolic of Denmark's cultural and trade ties within the Hanseatic world.
Notes:
Terrain includes surfaces at the museum. Inside church visit(s) may not be possible if religious services are being held or if precluded by time constraints. Minimum age is 10 years.
