Take a wheeled sled (cart) for a spin with you driving. Long before the winter snow arrives, it's possible to experience the fun and excitement of dog-powered transport.
Transfer from Alta to Holmen Husky Lodge. Here, it's dogs galore, and your guide will instruct you on handling your cart — a sturdy vehicle built for two with large off-road tires, spring suspension, a steering bar, and even a handbrake. Not comfortable with driving your own dog cart? No problem — just hop on a guide-driven cart and let someone else take the reins.
Six strong dogs will pull you along the banks of the Alta River and through the nearby forest. The journey provides ample time to enjoy the ride, the power of the dogs, and the beautiful Arctic countryside. Drivers and passengers can switch places at the halfway point, as you wish.
Back at the kennel, take a seat around the fire and enjoy a hot drink waiting for you in the traditional Sámi lavvo (tent). Your guide will talk about life as a dog musher. And, of course, there's plenty of time to meet an entire farm-full of happy husky dogs. Feel free to take pictures.
Notes:
Tour requires walking 100-200 yards on the farm. Wear clothing that can easily be washed; you may get dirty when in contact with the dogs. The availability of husky puppies is seasonal. Children under the age of 3 must be secured in a child's car seat on the transportation. These are not available through the tour operator; you must bring your own from home.
