Kallisté was what the ancient Greeks called Corsica, and it means "the most beautiful." In few corners of the Mediterranean will you find water as transparent, sand as soft and white, and weather so dependably warm and sunny.
This outing offers a panoramic drive from Ajaccio to San Bastiano Pass, with superb views of the Gulf of Ajaccio along the way. You will follow the coastal route along the sandy beachfront of the Gulf of Sagone. The road takes you through little summer resorts before arriving in the ancient Greek village of Cargese, sitting high above a deep blue bay.
Follow your guide on foot through winding, flower-filled lanes, dripping with fig trees, bougainvillea and palm trees, and learn about the origins of the village, when 730 Greek settlers from the southern Peloponnese landed in Corsica in 1676. You will visit the two churches, one Catholic and one Orthodox — a reminder of the old antagonism between the two cultures.
Drive back along the same road and stop on the way for a taste of local products before returning to Ajaccio.

Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and many steps. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
