Take an exciting trip up the mighty Humber River in a 10-person zodiac, the Elmastukwek, the Mi’kmaw name for “going away from the river.” Enjoy dramatic forested hillsides, colourful foliage and stunning views as we wind our way up and down the river.
The “Mighty Humber” is 153 kms long and has a rich history of both the fishing and logging industry on the West coast of Newfoundland. Back in the day the loggers would float the cut logs down river to the paper mill located in Corner Brook. While this is no longer practiced, it is a great part of our history.
The Humber is also one of the world’s best recreational salmon fishing rivers famously attracting royalty and high-profile individuals. In its day, it was known for having Atlantic salmon weighing over 40-60 pounds.
As we approach Shellbird Island, you’ll learn of Spanish buried treasure. When looking closely at the mountain, you’ll see the face of an old man in a rock formation overlooking the island. "The Old Man in the Mountain" is said to be a marker for the treasure.
Meet us at the cruise dock, we’ll sign some waivers, enjoy a safety presentation, and then be on our way!
Notes:
Wear weather appropriate clothing. Bring an extra layer, as it can be cool on the water. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The boat is not wheelchair accessible. Minimum age is 13 years.
