Kotohiragu Shrine is dedicated to the guardian god of the sea and sits 1,709 feet above sea level at the top of Mount Zozu.
To reach the main shrine, visitors must climb a stone staircase of 785 steps. Though a strenuous climb, you will be well rewarded with sweeping views from the top. The main shrine is dedicated to many gods including the gods of agriculture, livestock, medicine and marine safety. When visiting, don't forget to look up as the ceiling features many wonderful paintings. You'll get a feel for the devotion of locals who visit this shrine regularly to worship.
Next, stop at a Shoinden building to see Japanese wall art on a fusuma entrance. On your way back to the ship, stop for photos at the post-feudal Maragame Castle.
Notes:
You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, with many steps.
