Tea is Shizuoka Prefecture's most famous product. In 2014, Shizuoka Prefecture set about establishing the Shizuoka tea brand and realizing the development of the Ochanosato Museum. Located in the largest tea farming area in Japan, the museum introduces the tea industry, its history and culture, as well as a tea ceremony house and beautiful garden.
Your day continues at Greenpia Makinohara — a green tea plantation and processing plant offering a hands-on green tea experience. Step out into the fields for a lesson on how to pick tea leaves. You'll learn which leaves are best and the optimal size of the leaf.
The on-site factory showcases the manufacturing process. Watch the workers in action and follow along with illustrated signs describing each step in the process, from steaming to straining to grinding.
Step inside at Ogane-ke, the residence of the Ogane family built about 300 years ago. The main building and Nagayamon Gate are both designated National Important Cultural Properties. Enjoy the seasonal flowers in the garden and the views of Mt Fuji and Suruga Bay in the distance.
