This wheelchair-accessible Nagasaki tour is designed for all guests, including those using a wheelchair. From the Atomic Bomb Museum to the scenic charm of Glover Garden, this experience offers a deep dive into Nagasaki's past and present, along with a taste of its iconic local cuisine.
Head to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, whose thoughtfully designed exhibits allow all visitors to engage fully with the experience. Through photographs, artifacts, scale models, and multimedia displays, the museum conveys the events of August 9, 1945, the human impact of the atomic bomb, and Nagasaki's enduring message of peace and nuclear disarmament.
Lunch features Nagasaki champon, a regional specialty with Chinese influences. This hearty noodle dish is made with a rich white soup from pork or chicken bones, thick noodles, and an assortment of vegetables, meat, and seafood.
The journey continues to Glover Garden, home to beautifully preserved Western-style residences from the late 19th century. These homes belonged to foreign merchants who played a key role in Japan's modernization. The garden's cobblestone paths and scenic views of Nagasaki Port provide a glimpse into the city's past, with three of its buildings designated Important Cultural Properties by the Japanese government.
Shop and stroll/roll at Glover Hill, where small stores offer local crafts, souvenirs, and taste treats.
Notes:
This tour is designed to be accessible for all guests, including those using a wheelchair (the tour operator suggests bringing a companion to assist if needed, as guides are not allowed to push wheelchairs). Only non-ambulatory guests using a wheelchair that requires specific accommodations, such as a lift/ramp and wheelchair anchor on the transportation, can book this tour, as it ensures accessible transportation; guests using a collapsible wheelchair and able to board the coach via the steps must book Accessible Nagasaki: Whispers of the Past, Flavors of Forever (Companion). Companions can book the same tour under the title Accessible Nagasaki: Whispers of the Past, Flavors of Forever (Companion). The tour route avoids stairs; however, the nature of access may differ from the standards you are familiar with at home. Accessible bathrooms with wide doors are available along the tour route. An accessible vehicle with a wheelchair lift or ramp is used for transportation. The number of accessible vehicles available is extremely limited; make your accessible shore excursion reservations as far in advance as possible. Wheelchair users have a limit weight of 550lb (guest + equipment combined) and maximum height inside the vehicle is 5ft (155cm). Guests requiring accessible transportation, please complete the Special Services form at https://book.hollandamerica.com/specialServices/login.action; this will ensure that suitable transportation is in place for your tour. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
