Climb aboard an open-air, island-style bus for a journey up Mt Alava. Take photos from this great vantage point.
Watch for historical buildings such as the original High Court, the old Navy commissary, the post office building, the police station and the local marketplace as you pass through the capital city of Pago Pago.
You're headed to Fagasa village for a traditional ava ceremony, which showcases Samoan dancing and singing and includes a drink produced from the local ava root. Participate in this festive welcoming ceremony; then, rejoin your bus and travel back to the ship.
Notes:
Transfers are by open-air island bus with bench-style seats. Limited tourism infrastructure is part of the charm here; you are trading breadth of guide experience for authentic interaction. Please bring your spirit of adventure and bear with any language difficulties or operational surprises that may crop up. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable/reef-safe sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Tour operates rain or shine but may be canceled by the operator in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. Tour sequence may vary. Tour does not operate on Sundays.
