Board a motorcoach for the drive to the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. You will walk 15-20 minutes from the parking area to the shrine. Dedicated in AD 905, this shrine commemorates a Heian official renowned for his learning and purity of heart. The current shrine dates to 1591 and is a classic example of Momoyama Period architecture with its elegant, Buddhist-inspired bridges, serene ponds and ancient camphor trees. Browse for souvenirs along the street.
Continue to the Kushida Shrine in the heart of Hakata, passing through the Tenjin Business District en route. Founded in AD 758, the shrine is the starting point of the Oiyama race, which concludes the city's annual summer festival.
You will also visit the iconic Fukuoka Tower. Considered a city landmark, it's Japan's largest seaside tower, standing 767 feet tall and covered in 8,000 semi-mirrored panels. The Tower functions as a broadcast antenna for TV and radio networks.
Notes:
The main hall of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is partially covered for renovation work. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Tour sequence may vary.
