Rotorua is the touchstone of Maori culture and is a thermal wonderland of fiery heat, sulfuric air, steam and magical waters. New Zealand is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and the geothermal activity of its volcanic plateau is manifested in erupting geysers, steaming fumaroles, mud pools and hot geothermal waters.
At Hell's Gate Geothermal Reserve, you'll have plenty of time to explore independently. Walk past steaming fumaroles and pools of boiling mud -- such proximity to these is both thrilling and unnerving. See the violent geothermal activity of the Inferno and the Kakahi Falls -- the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere.
Nature's own warning signs will keep you on the straight and narrow path to Hell's Gate.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
