Your lifelong dream of taking a walk on the wild side is about to come true. Board a fast ferry for a 45-minute cruise down Lynn Canal to the town of Haines -- a great opportunity to visit two ports in one day. Keep a watchful eye out for marine life and bald eagles dotted along the shoreline. Mountain peaks rise from the ocean to 6,000 feet, with cascading waterfalls making for fabulous photos of Alaska and its rugged terrain.
A one-hour narrated bus ride through the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve brings you to the Kroschel Wildlife Center, owned by Steve Kroschel. Steve is well known for his experience working with wild animals for movies such as Never Cry Wolf and the PBS Wild America series. He is truly the Doctor Doolittle of Alaska, interacting with his animals as their best friend and trustworthy caregiver.
Steve guides you through his 60-acre park, teaching you about the animals that live here and how they thrive in this protected habitat, retaining their independence while learning to trust humans. His center provides a home for numerous orphaned wild animals. Among them are a wolf, Kodiak bear, wolverine, porcupine and reindeer. Unsuited to release back into the wild, they will live out the rest of their natural lives here with their friend and caregiver.
Observe the behaviors of these intriguing animals to understand and appreciate the time it takes to gain their trust.
A snack is served on the bus as you return to the ferry and enjoy the passing scenery. The fast ferry returns you to Skagway.
Notes:
Tidal conditions can make the dock ramp very steep. The trip requires standing for an extended period of time as well as walking a quarter mile on groomed trails, a steep driveway and uneven terrain. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Wheelchairs and electric scooters cannot be accommodated. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf and a warm hat. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
