Travel to the center of the Eternal City with a panoramic drive past its most famous highlights -- the pyramid of Caius Cestius, Circus Maximus, Palatine Hill, the Colosseum, Via Veneto and the Borghese Gardens.
Crossing the Tiber River, you will enter the Vatican City for a visit to St Peter's Basilica. Pass through the awesome Bernini's Colonnade and step into the massive basilica that lies at the heart of Roman Catholicism. It houses Michelangelo's Pièta -- one of the most famous sculptures in the world.
Outside, you'll see the impressive square which, on special occasions, is filled with people from around the world. Enjoy lunch and free time before returning to the ship.
Notes:
Modest attire is required; knees, shoulders and midriffs must be covered. Use of an audio headset (included) will enhance your tour experience. Each guest is responsible for returning his/her headset after the tour. Missing headsets incur a €50 fee. You must pass through metal detectors at the St Peter's Basilica. Large bags or umbrellas, bottled water, video cameras, knives or scissors must be checked at the security checkpoints. The basilica can close for security reasons at any time; this is particularly relevant on Wednesdays when the Pope chooses to hold a mass service in St Peter's Square. You will encounter lines and delays -- your patience is appreciated. Only a certain number of visitors are allowed inside St Peter's Basilica at any one time; group access can be delayed. If your guide determines that the wait to enter St Peter's is longer than 45 minutes, you will forgo the inside visit and your guide will provide you with a full explanation and description while outside. More time for shopping or exploring independently will be substituted. Tour groups are not allowed inside St Peter's Basilica during religious services; however, entry will be allowed on an individual basis to view the interior quietly and reverently. In case the Basilica should be closed for security reasons or any unexpected event your guide will provide a full explanation from outside and free time for photos and shopping will be given. Parking for the Vatican may require 30-40 minutes of walking.
Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations.
