Experience Japan's colorful and dynamic past.
A comfortable motorcoach journey takes you through rolling, forested countryside to the famed Noboribetsu area, where you'll step back in time and experience some living history. At Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura theme park, it's like being in Japan during the Edo Period (1603 - 1867), when the Samurai warrior class broke away from the Imperial Court, and city life and the merchant class played a vital role in shaping society.
You'll have free time to explore the recreations of traditional Japanese structures, including Ninja houses and a theatre. Enjoy traditional games and activities and watch enchanting street and theatre performances. You'll be among Ninjas -- the mysterious figures whose primary function was to carry out covert operations for their feudal lords. Meet the beautiful Oiran courtesans who excelled at various arts, including poetry, calligraphy, tea ceremonies and music. They were so highly esteemed that only the samurai and the rich could afford their charms.
Return to your motorcoach for the short trip to Jigokudani. Lying along the fabled Rim of Fire, this is one of several areas of intense volcanic activity. Explore the Valley of Hell on a 20-minute guided walk to the 1,476-foot crater, complete with surrounding fumaroles and mineral springs. The hot springs are famous for supplying the nearby baths at the Noboribetsu Resort.
Your adventure ends as you reboard your motorcoach for the relaxing and scenic ride back to present-day Muroran and the ship.
Notes:
Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The Jidaimura Theatre may offer standing room only. Participants must negotiate several steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. The Jigokudani area is a very active volcanic region; participate at your own risk.
