Rising 10,032 feet above sea level, Haleakala is Maui's tallest peak and its name means House of the Sun. End your day on Maui with a journey to the summit of Haleakala volcano and its crater, just in time for sunset. A guided panoramic drive to the base of the mountain will take you through Maui's diverse scenery-past beaches and farmland, cane fields and small villages.
As you ascend the mountain and enter Haleakala National Park, the panoramic views from the road and from the summit are spectacular. Last erupting in 1790, this dormant volcano has a crater measuring 7.5 miles long, 2.5 miles wide, 21 miles around and 3,000 feet deep. It covers 19 square miles. From the viewpoint, you'll appreciate firsthand the true beauty of this massive crater with its interesting mix of volcanic rock and plant life.
Notes:
Bring a warm, windproof outer layer and a hat. Wear long pants and comfortable walking shoes. It can be quite cool atop the volcano and, after sunset, temperatures can drop rapidly to 30°F. Guests with a heart condition or respiratory difficulties should note that the elevation of Haleakala is 10,032 feet above sea level. Views are weather permitting; no guarantee is made with regard to distance and scope of views on any given day. The road to the summit is a series of winding switchbacks; guests who suffer from motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication.
