The magnificent Haleakala volcano is the highest point on the island of Maui, at 10,032 feet above sea level. All of Manhattan Island could fit inside its crater, with room to spare, and the Empire State Building could be vertically stacked four times without reaching the top. This dormant volcano last erupted in 1790.
Travel up the mountain through Maui's diverse scenery to Haleakala National Park -- a favorite in the islands for its sweeping panoramic views. The crater measures 7½ miles long, 2½ miles wide and 21 miles around. From the viewpoint, appreciate firsthand the immensity of this landmark.
Enjoy lunch at a local venue.
Next, you'll visit the Maui Ocean Center -- the largest tropical aquarium in the western hemisphere. Its displays offer fine examples of the brilliantly colored marine life found in Hawaii's rich waters.
Return to the ship via the highway.
Notes:
It is cool on Mt Haleakala; bring a windproof jacket. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Guests who have a heart condition or respiratory difficulties should note that the elevation of Haleakala is 10,032 feet above sea level. After the tour, there is an optional drop-off at Hilo Hattie's for shopping. Views are not guaranteed as they are weather and atmospheric conditions permitting. The road to the summit is a series of winding switchbacks; guests who suffer from motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication.
